40 Years in the Parts Department Makes Life Whole

July 26, 2022

Neil started his career at Kleysen Transport in 1981, he retired on June 23, 2022. A remarkable 40-year career peppered with mutual respect, commitment and friendship between Neil and his colleagues.

After graduating from H.L Softley in 1980, Neil was in search of gainful employment and enrolled in a workforce training program. In 1981, soon after completing the program, Kleysen Transport offered him a part-time job in the parts department. The decision made by CEO (at the time) Hubert Kleysen would have a positive ripple effect on the company and Neil for decades to come.

His job, as Shop Assistant, consisted of custodial duties. Sorting part bins, dusting, and sweeping- regular office maintenance. He kept the truck keys in order and ensured the drivers had up-to-date weather reports before hitting the road. He cared about them and wanted them to be safe.

Neil greeted everyone at work with a big smile, a high five and for those who were open to it, a hug. He enjoyed playing practical jokes on his colleagues – he brought joy and laughter to each day.

He was a valued member of the team. His colleagues appreciated his dedication and humour and Neil appreciated working alongside them. Life changes a lot between the ages of 22, when Neil started, and 63, when he retired. He experienced many big changes while working in the parts department, like moving into a group home and learning how to navigate life without his parents, after they passed. When Neil’s dad could no longer drive him to and from work, colleagues offered to carpool, while he figured out a new transportation system. Everyone at Kleysen was committed to creating an inclusive work environment. The organization provided a flexible schedule throughout these transitions and staff ensured he was part of every bonus structure.

Neil’s career afforded him the independence to travel: visit his sister in Atlanta, take cruises, and enjoy holidays in Disney World, Nashville, and Grand Forks.

In retirement, Neil will continue to stay active, with an extended family and many interests and hobbies like painting, golf, bowling, and performing magic. He’ll need to keep his magic skills fresh as he’s a staple at the company Halloween party, they’ve asked him to return each year.

After four decades, it’s clear that Kleysen Transport made its mark on Neil’s life as an inclusive, hospitable and compassionate employer and Neil on the organization, as a dedicated, caring and hard-working colleague. Together, Neil and the team at Kleysen created a bond that will last a lifetime.
