Age of Majority Planning
This package will provide you with general information around Age of Majority planning. This package will provide information about adult services, documents required to determine service eligibility, how to obtain personal identification, and other helpful resources.
The following provides a brief outline of four adult services to consider as you plan for your child’s future. These services are voluntary and applications are required to determine eligibility for these supports.
Community Living disABILITY Services (CLDS) provides a range of supports to eligible adults who have significantly impaired intellectual functioning with impaired adaptive behaviour to live safely and participate fully in their community. Referrals to CLDS can be completed when your child is 15 years old.
A psychological assessment completed within 5 years prior to your child turning 18 years old is required to determine eligibility for CLDS. An updated assessment is required if a previous psychological assessment was completed prior to your child turning 13 years old. If this is the case, please speak to your school resource teacher to request an updated psychological assessment to determine eligibility for CLDS.
St.Amant Psychology Services also provides psychological assessments to determine eligibility for adult services. A referral to St.Amant Psychology Services is encouraged to ensure that psychological assessments are completed prior to the age of 18. The referral can be withdrawn if the school completes the psychological assessment before St.Amant Psychology Services. If you are interested in a referral to St.Amant Psychology Services, please reach out to your St. Amant Case Worker or Community Services Worker and complete the Consent to Exchange Information form. There is no charge for this assessment.
Employment and Income Assistance (EIA) provides financial assistance to Manitobans who have no other way to support themselves or their families. Your child may be eligible for assistance when they turn 18 years old if their basic needs and shelter costs are more than their total financial resources.
Manitoba Supports for Persons with Disabilities (MSPD) is a new income support program designed for persons with severe and prolonged disabilities who are eligible for income assistance.
This program provides the same financial and health benefits as EIA as well as some additional benefits.
To apply for Employment and Income Assistance and/or Manitoba Supports for Persons with Disabilities contact 1-855-944-8111 or your local Employment and Income Assistance Office. A staff member will collect additional information, answer any questions you have, and schedule an intake meeting to determine eligibility for this support.
Employability Assistance for People with Disabilities (EAPD) provides a range of employment focused services to assist adults with disabilities in preparing for, obtaining, and maintaining employment.
