St.Amant is proud to partner with educational institutions so that students are able to complete their practicum placements within our organization. Please be aware that our ability to support placement requests depends on many factors including placement supervision requirements, program capacity and so on. General information
What is a practicum at St.Amant?
A practicum is a temporary professional working experience that is completed by a current post-secondary student. It allows the student to gain valuable work experience and on-the-job training. Practicum positions are unpaid at St.Amant (though students may be funded through their institution) and may be conducted in-person, virtually/online or in a hybrid work environment.
The practicum sponsor is your main contact at St.Amant. They are responsible for ensuring processes are being followed and information is gathered appropriately during your practicum.
Am I guaranteed a practicum placement?
Unfortunately, no. We will do our best to accommodate your request, however the availability of practicum placements depends on the capacity of the program area.
What types of placements are available for students?
St.Amant provides a broad range of services and a broad range of possible placements. For example, we may be able to accommodate practicum placements related to social work, education, human resources, psychology, direct support, nursing, childcare and more.
The length and location of the placement will vary and should be agreed upon with the sponsoring program at St.Amant.
Who do I contact for more information about practicum placements?
If you know the department or staff with whom you’d like to be placed, you may contact them directly. If you are unsure of which department or do not have a specific contact person, please send an email to training@stamant.ca. You may be asked to participate in an interview or provide more information about your program of study, goals, and expectations.
Before placement
Do I need to do a Criminal Record, Child/Adult Abuse registry check prior toplacement?
Criminal Record, Adult and Child Abuse Registry checks are required at the expense of practicum students 18 years of age and older. Proof of checks complete within six months of the practicum start date will be accepted.
Are there fees associated with a practicum placement?
If on site, you may request a temporary parking pass through Volunteer Services for a $10 refundable deposit.
If an identification card or proximity card are required (at the discretion of the practicum sponsor), costs are covered by St.Amant.
Do I need any special immunizations to do my practicum placement atSt.Amant?
Practicum students are strongly encouraged to have the flu vaccine. Students participating in a practicum of longer than three months may be required to complete Occupational Health checks.
During the practicum
What happens during my practicum placement?
Regular contact is maintained between you, your post-secondary institution, and St.Amant. Both you and St.Amant may be asked to complete evaluations of the placement upon completion.
Do I need to attend training at St.Amant?
All students are expected to complete online training regarding Workplace Health and Safety, the Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), Emergency Measures, Infection Control, the Accessibility Act for Manitobans, the Violence Prevention Program and WHMIS.
Students are required to attend the facilitated Corporate Orientation when their placement is more than two weeks/80 hours. For placements shorter than two weeks, attendance at Corporate Orientation is at the discretion of the sponsor.
If applicable, you may be required to attend additional orientations/training based on placement area.
Who is responsible for tracking my hours?
It is your responsibility to track your hours to ensure you are meeting your school’s hour requirements.
What happens if I miss a day of practicum?
It will depend on the agreement that the placement agency has in place; in most cases the missed day can be rescheduled.
I require certain accommodations related to a disability or medical needs. Canyou accommodate me?
If you require specific accommodations because of a disability or medical need, let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you.
After the practicum
Can I complete a second practicum?
It is possible to complete more than one practicum, though placement depends on the capacity of the sponsoring program and is not guaranteed.
Can my practicum placement turn into employment?
It is possible, though not guaranteed and depends on a variety of factors.
