Celebrating Black History Month: A Conversation with Bernadette Faida
At St.Amant, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace where every voice is valued. In recognition of Black History Month, we had the privilege of speaking with Bernadette Faida, Assistant – Administrative with St.Amant Community Residential Program. As a member of the St.Amant People of African Heritage Committee (a sub-committee of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee), Bernadette offers her perspective on the significance of Black leadership, representation, and advocacy. Join us for this thoughtful discussion between Bernadette and Marcel Fisette, Manager of Communications at St.Amant.

Marcel Fisette: Thank you, Bernadette, for joining us today. I’d like to start our conversation by learning more about your personal and professional journey. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your role at St.Amant?
Bernadette Faida: My name is Bernadette Faida. I am one of the therapy administrative assistants here at St.Amant. My role involves supporting the team with various administrative tasks and communications.
MF: That’s great, thank you. So what inspired you to join the People of African Heritage Committee?
BF: When I was asked to join, I was really happy because I wanted to connect with others and engage in meaningful discussions that foster inclusion, multiculturalism and diversity. I also wanted to be part of something that promotes networking and advocacy for equity.
MF: That’s a great perspective. How has your cultural background shaped your work and leadership?
BF: My background has given me a strong work ethic and resilience. It has shaped my teamwork approach and my advocacy for diversity in the workplace.
MF: Let’s talk about committee involvement and impact. Can you share a proud achievement from your work within the committee?
BF: We’re still in the early stages, and I only recently joined, but my goal is to help create a space where Black employees feel seen and heard through events and initiatives.
MF: That’s very important work. What challenges do Black professionals face, and how does the committee help address them?
BF: One of the challenges is under-representation, which can stem from a lack of connections and networking opportunities. The committee helps by fostering a sense of community and providing a platform for professional growth and advocacy.
MF: Absolutely. Now, let’s discuss Black leadership and legacy. What does Black leadership mean to you?
BF: Black leadership for me represents empowerment, integrity, and breaking down barriers for others in the community.
MF: Who are some Black leaders who have inspired you?
BF: Maya Angelou and Viola Desmond. Their advocacy and resilience inspire me.
MF: Wonderful. Now, as we look at Black History Month and beyond, why is Black History Month important to you?
BF: It’s important because it honours Black contributions to society and allows us to reflect on a history of resilience and strength.
MF: How can organizations better support Black employees year-round?
BF: Organizations should continue fostering inclusivity, provide mentorship opportunities, and address bias in hiring and promotion processes.
MF: What’s one key message you’d like to share about Black history and inclusion?
BF: For me, Black history is about recognizing Black contributions in our communities and ensuring that our voices are heard—not just in the past but for a better future for all.
MF: That’s a powerful message. In closing, what advice do you have for young Black professionals?
BF: As a Black working mother and a mother of young adults, my advice to young Black professionals is this: stay confident, seek supportive mentors, and always remember that your voice matters.
MF: That’s wonderful, Bernadette. Your insights are so thoughtful and inspiring. Thank you for sharing your experiences and perspectives with us today.
BF: Thank you for having me!
