Did you know that September 13-19 marks Direct Support Professional Recognition Week? This is an important opportunity to celebrate the Direct Support Professionals who work tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of the people they support. Their work is the quiet strength behind every success story, supporting people to live with dignity, joy, and hope.
In honour of DSP Recognition Week, we will be highlighting some of the Direct Support Professionals who work so hard to ensure that the people supported by St.Amant live fulfilling lives. Anthony joined the St.Amant family over 10 years ago. He has created lasting relationships with the people he supports, always showing up as an advocate, ally, and friend.
I have been with St.Amant for a little bit over 10 years now, precisely 10 years and 6 months. Originally, I joined St.Amant because I wanted to give back to this great country and the people of Canada, my adopted country. I enjoy being a DSP a lot, I get job satisfaction from it.
A DSP is an advocate for those they support. To me, advocacy means I assist people supported to say what they cannot say and support them to do what they may not be able to do themselves, especially when things are not going right. We are advocates in the sense that when things are not going well, the DSP should be able to bring the issue up for discussion and find a solution. A DSP must ensure the care, safety, and well-being of those they support. The person supported’s independence and choice are paramount, too.
The most rewarding part of this job is seeing the people I support happy. I also love to see how people appreciate Direct Support Professionals. Each week, the same family member visits the person I support. I see so much joy and happiness in her each time she visits, she always expresses gratitude for the services provided by St.Amant.
Anthony, thank you for your incredible commitment to the people you support. Your hard work, dedication, and loyalty have helped shape St.Amant into such a special place. Today, and everyday, we celebrate you.
