De-escalating Challenging Behaviour for Families and Caregivers

The framework for this class is taken directly from the Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) training and will explore how a crisis develops and how families can most appropriately respond at each level of crisis with the emphasis on early intervention.
We will explore positive communication strategies (verbal, non-verbal and paraverbal) and how best to employ them to de-escalate situations. We will speak about how the family member can most positively impact the de-escalation.
The concept of risk will be explored and how it exists on a continuum from low to high. Correctly assessing level of risk is key in responding most appropriately in any situation.
Safety will sometimes become compromised. Disengagement techniques will be taught to assist in preparing families to maintain their own safety in an escalating situation where they may get grabbed, get their hair pulled, get bitten, etc.
As a very last resort there may be times that the child may need to have their ability to actually cause harm reduced. Holding techniques will be taught to assist in preparing families to maintain the safety of the child, themselves or others.
There is no certification from this training.
