Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) – Essentials
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) provides the knowledge, skills, and attitudes for participants to recognize changes in mental health, respond supportively, and apply practical actions for declining mental health and crisis situations. It helps participants build confidence, reduce stigma, and enhance their own mental health.
Objectives
The MHFA course helps participants:
- Increase their awareness of mental health
- Improve their confidence providing help
- Decrease their mental health-related stigma
- Enhance their mental health
Length: 6.5 hours
Cost: $50/person (internal); $160/person (external)
Certificate: Participants will receive a certificate of completion if they complete all six hours of course material. There is no test at the end of the course.
MHFA Certification
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Certification course provides the knowledge, skills, and attitudes for participants to recognize changes in mental health, respond supportively, and apply practical actions for declining mental health and crisis situations. It helps participants build confidence, reduce stigma, and enhance their own mental health.

Length: 13 hours, delivered over two days
Cost: $75/person (internal); $275/person (external)
Certificate: After successful completion of all 12 hours of course delivery participants will write a test to receive Certification in MHFA. Certificates are valid for three years.
What’s the Difference?
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), designed and offered by the Mental Health Commission of Canada, provides the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to support a person who may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being, a mental health or substance use crisis until professional help is available.
MHFA is now available in two formats. MHFA Essentials provides core knowledge and tools in a condensed format and is delivered over one day. MHFA Certification provides an in-depth review of core knowledge and tools. Upon successful completion of MHFA Certificate participants will receive the official Mental Health First Aid Certificate, valid for three years.
