Teaching Social Skills & Inspiring Friendships
Telling others how you feel, making small talk while waiting for the bus, inviting friends to your
birthday party, telling jokes and giving high fives… These social skills may seem simple. But if
you look closely at how we learn them, it can quickly become complicated! In this class, we will
explore social skills in a systematic way, and we will learn which skills to teach and how to
teach them. We will pay special attention to the characteristics of autism, which can make
some skills more difficult to learn, and we will acknowledge personal preferences and individual
differences in our desire for friends and meaningful connection.
