Video: Introduction to Challenging Behaviour

When challenging behaviours occur, it can be quite frustrating for parents, staff and the individual who engages in problem behaviour. This presentation will review possible causes of challenging behaviour in children with autism and why it is important to address behaviour based on its cause or function. Viewers will learn how to define and assess challenging behaviours. The use of proactive strategies will be reviewed such as using visual supports. Basic evidence-based treatment strategies will also be reviewed, including positive reinforcement, extinction and functional communication training.
