Treatment of seizures

Daily anti-seizure medication is the most common treatment for seizures. The medication will not cure the seizure disorder but the goal is that it will help control the seizures by decreasing or stopping the seizures from occurring.

As with any medication, there can be side effects:

  • Fatigue
  • Drowsiness
  • Loss of coordination
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Drooling
  • Decreased appetite
  • Tremor
  • Weight loss or gain
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness
  • Impaired attention

Other treatments for seizure disorders include epilepsy surgery, ketogenic diet, and vagal nerve stimulation (VNS therapy).
