Synopsis: This presentation will give attendees a chance to learn more about ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). Attendees will learn about the diagnosis, prevalence and areas of impairments of ASD. Understanding the diagnosis will help those working with individuals with ASD understand why sometimes routines seem to be difficult to change, transitions can be difficult, and why challenging behaviours may occur. We will discuss a variety of strategies (i.e., positive reinforcement, visual supports) shown to be effective in teaching individuals living with Autism to be more independent, increase communication skills and participate in their community.
