This two day workshop will review what challenging behaviours are along with the possible causes and why it is important to treat challenging behaviours based on their function. Attendees will learn about how to define and assess what is happening in order to understand the function of the challenging behaviour using basic data recording techniques such as functional assessment. Basic behavioural principles, procedures and strategies will be presented such as positive reinforcement and the use of proactive strategies (i.e., visual supports). In addition, various interventions will be presented such as extinction, functional communication training, self-management and punishment strategies.
