Early Learning Program Activities and Characteristics
The Autism Early Learning Program works collaboratively with families and caregivers to provide sound, effective, evidence-supported educational programs. Programming is individualized and based on the comprehensive assessment of each child. Our core activities are listed below.
Children are assessed throughout their participation in the St.Amant Autism Programs to determine learning priorities and measure progress.
Teaching Programs / Lesson Plans
Autism Consultants design teaching programs using strategies based in Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) such as reinforcement, prompting, fading, incidental teaching, and discrete trial teaching (DTT). The Autism Consultants and Senior Tutors continuously monitor implementation of the teaching programs to ensure fidelity and continuous progress.
One-to-one teaching sessions
In the comprehensive model of service children participate in two learning sessions every day, five days a week. Each session is 3 to 3.5 hours in length.
In the focused model of service, children participate in one learning session every day, five days a week. Each session is 3 to 3.5 hours in length.
Clinic Meetings are led by an Autism Consultant every 1 to 3 months depending on the child’s place of residence. All team members, including parents, discuss programming, successes and challenges. All team members work with the child and observe one another to achieve consistency in teaching strategies for optimal learning. Other professionals who are part of the child’s team such as the Speech and Language Pathologist and Occupational Therapist are also invited to participate in these meetings.
The Senior Tutor provides training and support sessions to tutors and parents every 2 to 6 weeks depending on the child’s place of residence.
Challenging behaviour support
Consultants prioritize improvement in challenging behaviour by using functional behavioural assessment and functional analysis to assess the function of challenging behaviour and design Behavioural Intervention Plans that address those functions. Positive supports and Functional Communication Training are often used to modify the environment to reduce challenging behaviour and to improve communication to replace challenging behaviour.
Promoting parental involvement
Families are an integral part of their child’s education and have a significant role in supporting the program. Parents are required to provide five hours per week of targeted teaching to their children and participate in Clinic Meetings. In addition parents are responsible to collect data on targeted skills and provide all programming materials. Successful partnerships between professionals and parents contribute to better child learning outcomes.
