This award was created in honour of Margaret Teresa McDonell, an early Manitoba pioneer who upon her arrival to St. Boniface in 1855, provided care to Francophone and Métis families living in the new Red-River colony. Margaret-Teresa also played a part in the founding of St. Boniface Hospital.
This award, will be presented by Santé en français at a dinner preceding the 2016 Francophone health and social services forum.
Margaret Teresa McDonell was born in 1835 in St. Andrew, Ontario. At sixteen, she joined the Sisters of Charity in Ottawa and took the name of Sister Ste. Thérèse.
In the early 1850s, the Grey Nuns of Manitoba were in need of help for the young colony. They put out a call for reinforcements to the Sisters of Charity in Ottawa. Sister Ste-Teresa soon joined them, volunteering to make the journey out West.
A woman of great compassion and a wonderful healer, she used all of her knowledge and talents in the medical field to help the people of Manitoba. She was a gentle and caring woman of incredible patience and the Métis people loved her. Sister Doctor, as she was often called, remained in St. Boniface until her death on November 4, 1917.
