You Are Making Doug’s Retirement Fun

April 27, 2023

Thanks to you, Doug, who is 55 years old, can age in place in his community, where he’s creating friendships and doing the things he loves most – Retirement has never felt so good.

Doug spent most of his life living with his parents and sister, but after they passed away, Doug moved in with his brother Mark, who is 20 years older than him, and his sister-in-law, Wendy. They lived a happy life together in their home for over 12 years.

When they noticed Doug was having difficulty getting up the stairs, experiencing vision loss, and showing early signs of dementia, worry set in. “I didn’t have the physical strength to do it anymore.” Says Mark.
As it became more difficult for them to safely care for Doug, their search for a safe, home-like environment with the support he needed led them to St.Amant’s Community Residential Program.

“We knew the best place for him would be within a family-like setting. That’s exactly what he has here, with his roommates,” Wendy says. “Doug is still Doug, but he’s happier now. He’s coming out of his shell! He’s asking for help. He’s even eating better.” she sighs with relief.

You are helping Doug do the things he loves most and ensuring that, no matter what the future holds for him health-wise, he can stay in his home and age in place. His home is fully accessible and equipped with lifts in each room of the house, thanks to your support.

Doug loves celebrating the holidays, going out for cookies with his friends, and painting beautiful works of art in his home. He is also a big comic fan, and thanks to you, he was able to attend Comiccon last year and meet some of his favourite characters.

YOU are allowing him to live his life to the fullest. Thank you for giving Doug the opportunity to enjoy his retirement and for helping him safely age in place in his new home!

“Thank you for the new chill chair!”- Dorothy Harper

January 25, 2023

Dorothy is a kind, social woman, who gains energy from those around her. For many years, she enjoyed using a large recliner in the living area of her home, but some recent health changes have made that difficult and unsafe for her.

During a visit to the St.Amant Spirit Cottage, she tried a Chill Out Chair and reported feeling much more comfortable.

Thanks to your support, she recently received her own Roll’er Chill Out Chair! This chair can be wheeled from room to room so she can easily move around her home while staying cozy and comfortable. This reduces the number of transfers she has to go through while allowing her to participate in all the household activities. This is safer for Dorothy and her support team.

Dorothy is very thankful for her new chair, made possible by YOUR support. She sent us a card that says: “Thank you for the new chill chair! I love the colour and table top so I can relax while playing games. It is so comfortable! I am very grateful! Sincerely, Dorothy Harper.”

The matching ottoman allows her to elevate her legs when she wants, and the attachable tray means she can play cards and games with her roommates and support staff while still lounging in her seat. It is even a fun festive colour that she got to choose!

Thank you for making in a difference in Dorothy’s life.

Matthew’s Story: Receiving a Sense of Purpose

Matthew’s Story: Receiving a Sense of Purpose

March 29, 2022

Having a job gives Matthew a sense of purpose and spending money for independence. It’s because of you that Matthew still has a job. Every week he delivers flyers in his neighbourhood. As winter approached, Matthew didn’t have the gear needed for deliveries. With your support, he purchased boots, gloves, and a warm jacket, plus a sled to pull flyers.

“I wouldn’t have been able to finish my route or keep my job,” Matthew said.

Your generosity gives Matthew the dignity to buy the things he wants that don’t fit into his tight budget. With his paycheque, he can do spontaneous things, buy new clothes, or purchase gifts and treats. Plus, he can download games for his iPad, go to the movies, play bowling, and have fun at the casino.

Matthew also values being a presence in his neighbourhood and the exercise that comes with the job. He relaxes knowing he has the right gear to take on winter.

“Thank you, I truly appreciate your help,” Matthew beamed.

Linda’s Story: Pedaling her way to better health

Linda’s Story: Pedaling her way to better health

February 10, 2022

COVID restrictions have impacted many people in a variety of ways. Some people got crafty; others baked. Some folks took up a new hobby and others dusted off an old one. But overall, there is one thing virtually everyone did, and that was stay home.

Linda is no exception. Over the last few years, she hasn’t been as active as she used to be, and her leg muscles have weakened to such an extent that she has been falling often. St.Amant physiotherapist Rita recommended that she get more exercise to help rebuild the strength in her legs, however her fear of falling was making her hesitant.

A member of her support team suggested she try a small stationary pedal bike. It is small enough to use while sitting in her chair and she can carry on with other activities that she enjoys. This will help build strength and improve her stamina, while keeping her safe from falls.

Thanks to your donations, Linda is now happily using her new pedal bike! This eliminates her fear of falling and helps her get healthy while she watches TV or works on puzzles; two of her favorite past times. It will help Linda get her heart rate up and maintain range of motion in her ankles, knees and hips.

The display screen allows her to track her progress and set new goals. She can even put it on the table and use her arms to pedal, so she can build upper body strength too.

Because of your wonderful support, Linda is gaining strength and confidence and improving her overall health.

Thank you!

Andrea’s Story: Essential Equipment Elevates Social Life

Andrea’s Story: Essential Equipment Elevates Social Life

November 10, 2021

Spending 8-16 hours a day in a wheelchair means that comfort and support is not a luxury but a necessity. Wheelchair users will tell you that an ill-fitting wheelchair will cause pressure sores, issues with posture, difficulty with eating and digestion and can lead to being confined to home or worse bed.

Andie is one of many people supported by St.Amant that use a wheelchair to get around every day. She is a very social young woman who enjoys going to bingo, bowling with her friends and getting out to swim at the local pool. She especially loves to help babysit her four young nephews.

Andrea’s Story: Essential Equipment Elevates Social Life

Recently, her mom, Joan, began to notice that Andie was often leaning to one side when in her wheelchair and was twisted in her seat, despite her mom’s help to sit straight. “Andie rarely complains about anything,” said Joan “but I could tell that she was uncomfortable.”

St.Amant Physiotherapist, Macara recommended a new custom molded back and seating for her wheelchair to improve Andrea’s positioning. Like so many specialized health items needed by people with disabilities, this seating is very expensive and is not covered by regular health funding.  The cost is out of reach for Andie’s family.

Andrea’s Story: Essential Equipment Elevates Social Life

Both Joan and Macara know how essential supportive seating is for Andie’s overall health and well-being. Andie spends nearly all of her waking time in her wheelchair, so it is imperative that she is well positioned.

“Being seated properly will allow Andrea to be comfortable for longer periods of time and will provide her with a greater ability to continue to do all of the things that bring her joy and fulfillment,” Macara explains.

Your donation will provide the custom seating Andie needs to ensure that she can keep bowling, babysitting and playing bingo!

Bobbilyn’s Story: In Need of a Life-Changing Device

Bobbilyn’s Story: In Need of a Life-Changing Device

October 25, 2021

Fixed incomes and the absence of extended health benefits mean critical tools are often financially out of reach for the people we support. Without your help, many people with disabilities will not have access to basic personal health items and medical equipment, and needs like hearing aids and mobility devices will go unmet.

Your gift today will fund a life-changing device for someone supported by St.Amant! As a life-long diabetic, Bobbilyn experiences frequent episodes of low blood sugar that make her feel sick, tired and unwell. Her doctor has recommended a continuous glucose monitor so that she, and her support team, can better track and manage her blood sugar levels.

Managing diabetes without the right tools can be life-threatening.

Bobbilyn’s Story: In Need of a Life-Changing Device

Bobbilyn was diagnosed with type one diabetes when she was 12. Since then, she has endured tens of thousands of finger pokes and countless insulin injections. She must be vigilant about her diet, exercise and blood sugar levels. Managing her health is a delicate balance that relies on sound information. This knowledge makes the difference between living a vibrant life and feeling sick and sluggish.

Using a continuous glucose monitor will reduce the number of painful finger pricks she has to undergo and will keep a record of her blood sugar trends. This will help predict and avoid debilitating lows before they occur. If not treated appropriately, blood sugar lows can lead to diabetic coma or death.

While the monitoring device itself is relatively inexpensive, the sensors it uses are not. Each sensor costs about $100 and needs to be replaced every two weeks. For people over 25 years old, this expense is not covered by Manitoba Health, and is completely out of her budget. Without your donation, Bobbilyn’s health will remain in jeopardy.

Bobbilyn is very enthusiastic about this new monitoring system and how it will improve her quality of life.

“I’ll be more relaxed and confident,“ she says. “It will save my life!”

Once she is more in control of her health, she will be more comfortable participating in activities she loves, like hiking and going out to meet friends and family.

Bobbilyn is passionate about the things she cares about. She loves her bearded dragon Sparky and all things dragon related. She adores Harry Potter and her favorite past times are walking and dancing. In fact, she has recently “danced away” over forty pounds and is feeling great!

The monitoring system will also give her doctor a historical record of her blood sugar trends. This detailed information will allow him to create better healthcare plans. This improved data will empower Bobbilyn with the knowledge she needs to manage her diabetes, and her own health.

Bobbilyn’s Story: In Need of a Life-Changing Device

The list of specialized equipment needed by people with disabilities is long and costly. Wheelchairs, walkers, glasses, dental work, orthotics…these items make a huge difference to quality of life, but are cost prohibitive when living on a fixed income. Your donation is needed to provide vital equipment to someone with a developmental disability.

What would happen if you needed a wheelchair or walker to get around but didn’t have the financial ability to purchase them? Imagine if every pair of shoes you needed had to be customized, but you couldn’t afford any. There is someone right now waiting for life-changing help. Please, send a gift today to improve someone’s health and help them live their best lives!

Please give today. You can donate on our secure website at stamant.ca/equipment.

With much appreciation,

Claudette’s Story: Riding in Style

Claudette’s Story: Riding in Style

February 5, 2021

Claudette’s main source of happiness is spending time window shopping, getting together with her long time love and cruising the streets looking out the window.

Claudette’s Story: Riding in Style

Due to changing health needs, these important things were becoming less accessible when she could no longer safely transfer into the standard seat in the van. Since wheelchair accessible vans are usually shared between homes, this left Claudette housebound half of the time.

St.Amant Occupational Therapist Shannon Hargreaves recommended a Bruno valet transfer seat that could be used in a regular van. These are very cost prohibitive, an expense far beyond anything that Claudette could manage on her own, so all efforts were made to request funding from government funding agencies. Sadly, these requests were denied so her staff turned to St.Amant Foundation for help.

Thanks to your generosity, the Bruno valet seat was purchased and installed in the van and Claudette regained valuable mobility and independence. Even though mall visits are out of the question right now, she is still able to go for drives and, most importantly, have physically distant outdoor visits with her loved ones.

Claudette is grateful for the increased independence the power seat gives her. At 56 years old, she has been supported by St.Amant since childhood and was one of the first to move into a community home. She values the ability to get out into her neighbourhood without having to rely on Handi-Transit or van sharing and continues to find joy in these excursions despite the current COVID-19 restrictions.

It is your generous support that made this possible for Claudette. THANK YOU!
