The Winnipeg Foundation Supports Children & Adults With Developmental Disabilities To Get Active

March 5, 2015

A pilot program received funding from The Winnipeg Foundation to help people with developmental disabilities get out and get active.
The St.Amant Leisure Program offers a variety of activities to suit a range of ages and interests such as soccer, swimming, football, dancing, crafts, culinary classes and more.
“We know that families and individuals we support can find it difficult to participate in leisure and recreation activities within the community. Yet we also know that all people need social connection and recreation; this program should make a big difference,” said John Leggat, President & CEO of St.Amant.

The funding of $25,000 from The Winnipeg Foundation is supporting staffing, space rentals and program materials.“The Winnipeg Foundation is pleased to support this project and help people of all abilities learn, grow, and participate fully in our vibrant community. The grant was drawn from the Moffat Family Fund, which helps ensure all Winnipeggers have opportunities to thrive. With this project, St.Amant is doing just that,” said Richard L. Frost, CEO, The Winnipeg Foundation.Currently the program is hosting two, ten-week sessions this spring that offer a total of 14 different activities. From swimming, crafts and soccer to a 10-week adventure exploring different areas of the city, the St.Amant leisure program should prove to be a place to make new friends and try new things.
As a pilot the program is currently open to people supported by St.Amant or on their wait-list. The goal is to open it more broadly for the next set of sessions. St.Amant also hopes to recruit and train enough volunteers who will also accompany people with disabilities to regular city or leisure guide activities and provide one to one support within the class.
