Meet Lindsay McCombe: A Q&A with a Dedicated Professional

Commencing her tenure as a part-time administrative assistant during her graduate studies, Lindsay’s path naturally evolved into one of coordination and leadership. Her involvement in initiatives such as the Disability Matters Vote Campaign and co-leadership of the Constituency Captain Working Group highlights her resolute advocacy for marginalized communities, culminating in the impactful 2023 campaign.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Lindsay’s vibrant spirit resonates in her diverse interests, from using data for advocacy to nurturing her artistic flair through virtual paint nights. Stacia Franz, Sr Manager of Corporate Communications had the pleasure to sit with Lindsay and engaged in some meaningful dialogue.
Stacia Franz: Good morning Lindsay, thanks for doing this today! Let’s start with some background: What was your career path to get to St.Amant? What brought you here?
Lindsay McCombe: I began as a volunteer with St.Amant in 2009 after completing my undergrad degree and feeling unsure about my next steps. This volunteer role as a research assistant planted the seeds for my interest in data. I subsequently did an honours thesis in 2010 focusing on data at St.Amant. This led to my starting position as an admin, which eventually evolved into my current managerial role.
SF: How long have you been at St.Amant and what is your job right now (and any previous positions)?
LM: I’ve been with St.Amant for 12 years now. Currently, I work as a manager at the St.Amant Research Centre. Over the years, I’ve transitioned from a part-time admin role to a coordinator, and now to a manager. In my current position, I support various research projects, coordinate connections between staff, programs, and data, and explore new partnerships. I also serve on several committees within St.Amant and external organizations related to health and wellbeing in developmental disabilities.
SF: What does your day-to-day look like?
LM: My role involves supporting research projects, coordinating data and staff connections, exploring partnerships, and providing evidence-based recommendations to stakeholders. Additionally, I teach paint workshops for the people we support a few times a year, blending my passion for art with my work.
SF: Now that we know your “what,” what is your “why”? What drives your passion for St.Amant?
LM: Before joining St.Amant, I felt like just a number in the private sector, valued only for the money I brought in. At St.Amant, I’ve been valued as a person, supported in my professional growth, and encouraged to do my best work. The organization’s values and supportive leadership foster a culture where meaningful advocacy and policy changes for Manitobans with disabilities are possible.
SF: Share an interesting, funny, or inspiring story about your work at St.Amant.
LM: One memorable experience was collaborating with Brandon Defoort on the Constituency Captain role for the Disability Matters Vote (DMVote) campaign. Our collective efforts led to a provincial roadside rally day just before the election, with rallies across different cities. Brandon’s enthusiasm and the community’s response made it a special and meaningful day.

LM: Brandon Defoort deserves recognition for his dedication and collaboration during the DMVote campaign. His efforts contributed significantly to the success of the initiative, making a meaningful impact on advocacy efforts.
