Recent Launch: Outdoor Communication Board

July 14, 2023

We’re happy to announce our launch of a Communication Board for people with disabilities to communicate using SymbolStix. Our Project Manager, Speech Pathologists, and Communications worked collaboratively because together, their passion was to:

  • Raise awareness on other ways people communicate.
  • Create an engaging and fun space for everyone.
  • To learn to communicate in different ways.

Our vision with the board is to provide accessible communication and social language opportunities for everyone who uses our outdoor areas. We believe that people have unique needs and have the right to communicate in the manner they choose!

Some people with complex communication needs or folks who are non-speaking may benefit from the use of an Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) system. AAC systems are methods of communication that increase a person’s ability to communicate by providing alternatives to spoken language. There are many different forms of AAC systems. One example is a Communication board. These are designed with inclusion in mind and help people access some of the most common words we use when communicating, called “core” words. Core vocabulary refers to a small number of high frequency words that make up about 80% of what we say.
