Doug’s Story: Freedom 55!

October 26, 2022

Turning 55 years old and beginning retirement, has Doug feeling happy and free! Aging in place, has never felt so good, comforting, and liberating!

This is Doug’s Story.

Doug celebrated his 55th birthday with his family this August. He spent most of his life living with his parents and sister, but after they passed away, Doug moved in with his older brother, Mark and sister-in-law, Wendy.

They lived a happy life together in their home for over 12 years. Doug travelled and worked at the local grocery store. He lead a full life!

When they noticed Doug had difficulty getting up the stairs, vision loss and early signs of dementia, worry set in. It started to become difficult for Mark, who is 75, and Wendy to safely care for Doug.

“I was so worried about him falling down, and that I wouldn’t be able to get him back up”, says Doug’s brother. “I didn’t have the physical strength to do it anymore”.

Mark is the last sibling left in their family, “I was worried: what would happen if something happened to us! What would happen to Doug?” added Wendy.

This is when Doug’s life took a turn for the better. He found his forever home with the support of St.Amant’s Community Residential Program. No more big changes in his routine, nor moves to a sibling’s house: he’s able to live his life safely, in his own home.

“Doug is still Doug, but he’s happier now. He’s coming out of his shell! He’s asking for help. He’s even eating better.” Says Wendy with a sigh of relief. We knew the best place for him would be within a family-like setting. That’s exactly what he has here, with his roommates,” she added.

Today, Doug shares that he loves to go out for cookies with his friends, celebrate his favourite holidays, and paint beautiful works of art in his home. A big comic fan, he hopes to attend the upcoming Comicon event in Winnipeg!

In retirement, he’s building his own community, where he’s able to create friendships and do the things he loves most. He is surrounded by family and a network of people that love and care for him so deeply, allowing him to continue living his life to the fullest.

Join us in wishing Doug a happy retirement in his new home!
