Inspiring The Future Generation

November 18, 2022

On November 2nd, 13 teenagers started the day by not going to school but by joining their parents/guardians at St.Amant for Take Our Kids to Work Day.

They began their adventure with a morning spent at the Spirit Cottage hosted by Corporate Education. Students from grade 9 learned about various programs and services, heard from great speakers, and engaged with fellow students to learn about the mission, values, and culture here at St.Amant.

The students had many great questions, but Corporate Education’s Melanie Forbes said, “My favourite part of the morning was when a student asked Ben Adaman how he would convince alien invaders to save St.Amant?” The question was answered just as creatively as it was asked!

This day was influential and inspiring for all involved.

“From my perspective, it was absolutely wonderful to have the kind of participation we had, with students joining from multiple program areas. It was the first one back in person since 2019! Parents and guardians were really excited to participate and to share the day with the kids,” said Kristina Kircher, Manager, Corporate Education.

These empowered students shared that they aspire to become researchers, doctors, teachers, artists, architects, engineers, police officers and more.

They learned about St.Amant and the variety of career opportunities we offer. A highlight for all was getting to listen, touch, hear, and see various specialized tools used to enhance the lives of the people supported and learning how each program and service work collectively. They saw first-hand how we work together in finding creative solutions to help the people supported to overcome barriers, live their best lives, and have fun!

Seeing their faces light up as they listened to Marda playing her drum and sharing important perspectives and insights gave goosebumps to all sitting in the Spirit Cottage that morning. Students learnt about the importance of consent and what Marda loves about her support staff.

“You should come here. It’s very good, said Marda with a sparkle in her eye.

Many memories were made, connections were created, but most importantly perspectives, ideas, and thoughts were shared in a safe space. Bre Brown from Volunteer Services spoke with them as they decorated diversity-themed cupcakes about the importance of diversity and inclusion for the organization.

“St.Amant strives to ensure that everybody feels welcome, safe and feel like they can be their whole selves!” exclaimed Bre.

After a fun-filled morning at the Spirit Cottage, all students accompanied their parents/guardians for the afternoon in their own places of work at here St.Amant.

We hope to see these students continue to be inspired by their parents/guardians. To be inspired in becoming a future generation of advocates for the people supported by St.Amant.
